Huskies Ninth at PING/ASU Invitational

March 31, 2006

Tempe, Ariz. - The 24th-ranked Washington women's golf team shot 12-over 300 to place ninth in the opening round of the PING/ASU Invitational. Host Arizona State shot 5-under 283 and holds a five-stroke lead over UCLA.

Juniors Ashley Bickerton and Amber Prange led the UW on the afternoon, shooting matching 1-over 73s to tie for 21st in the field. ASU's Tiffany Tavee is atop the leader board after carding a 6-under 66 in round one.

'I was encouraged with the way we started the round,' said Washington head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. 'We had a couple of hiccups coming in. The best thing is the energy and the attitude, which have been positive. I thought Ashley was very solid. That's what we need from that part of our lineup. And Amber continues to play well. She was four over on two holes and ended up one over, so that tells you something about how she played.'

Sung Ea Lee and Kim Shin both turned in 5-over 77s for the Huskies, tying for 50th in the field. Courtney McCracken's 83 placed her 86th. Washington is competing without senior Paige Mackenzie, who is playing this weekend at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, an LPGA event for which she received a sponsor's exemption.

The second round of the PING/ASU Invitational begins tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. (MT).
