Ireland, Zita Win at Stanford Invitational Track Meet

STANFORD, Calif. - The Washington State track and field teams came away with a pair of event wins on a chilly and rainy Friday at the Stanford Invitational Track Meet at Cobb Track and Angell Field. At time of publication, several Cougars were still competing in events that were scheduled to run until midnight.
Sophomore Jessica Zita (Echo, Ore.) won the women's B section shot put with a personal-best toss of 46-feet, 2 1/2 inches (14.08m), just nine inches away from an NCAA Regional Qualifying mark.
WSU senior Justin Ireland (Issaquah, Wash.) won the men's section B 1500m race in a time of 3 minutes, 49.13 seconds.
Cougar cross country All-American Haley Paul (sophomore, Phoenix, Ariz.) ran the second-fastest women's 5000m in WSU history with her NCAA Regioinal Qualifying time of 16:20.86 for 18th place in the women's section 1 race. Kelly Ramirez (Duvall, Wash.) finished 11th in women's 5k section 3 with a PR time of 17:15.76 and fellow sophomore Isley Gonzalez (Sunnyside, Wash.) was 15th in the same race with a PR time of 17:22.29.
In the women's 400m intermediate hurdles, Cougar assistant coach Ellannee Richardson ran a time of 57.45 for second place while freshmen Sara Trané (Sweden) ran a time of 1:02.49 for ninth and Lorraine King's (Fontana, Calif.) time of 1:04.07 was 17th.
Junior Diana Pickler advanced to the final of the women's 100m hurdles with her prelim time of 14.42 seconds.
In the women's field events contested Friday, freshman Catie Schuetzle (Spokane, Wash.) was fourth in the top section of the long jump with a leap of 19-5 1/4w (5.92m) and Diana Pickler's 18-3 1/4w (5.57m) was 12th. McKenzie Garberg (Benton City, Wash.) threw the hammer 169-9 (51.73m) for second place in the B section. Senior Jenna Dean (Glenwood, Wash.) threw the javelin 156-10 (47.81m) for fourth in the top section.
On the oval, sophomore Nicole McClendon (Granada Hills, Calif.) finished fourth in the women's 400m dash B section with a personal-best time of 57.15. In the women's 100m dash prelim, La Shawnda Porter (sophomore, Renton, Wash.) was 16th (12.36) and Nicole Hatcher (senior, Kennewick, Wash.) finished 17th (12.48) and did not advance to the final. Brandi Probasco-Canda (Portland, Ore.) was the top Cougar in the women's section B 200m race with a 13th place time of 25.30, with Hatcher right behind in 14th with a season-best time of 25.39.
Junior Brian Woods (Bueno Vista, Calif.) finished fifth in the men's section B 400m dash with a time of 49.15 seconds.
Robert Williams (freshman, Riverside, Calif.) just missed advancing to the final of the men's 110m hurdles after running a time of 14.71 for 10th as the top nine time move on. Williams finished 12th in 400m hurdles with a PR time of 54.10.
In the men's field events, Ryan Scott (sophomore, Kalama, Wash.) took second in the B section javelin with a throw of 189-0 (57.62m). Redshirt Phil MacArthur (Selkirk, Wash.) finished sixth in the B section of the men's hammer with a toss of 175-9 (53.57m).
The Stanford Invitational competition continues Saturday.
