No. 15 Texas Tops Huskies, 7-0

April 1, 2006

AUSTIN, Texas - The Husky women's tennis team fell today to the 15th-ranked Texas Longhorns and former Head Coach Patty McCain. Texas swept the match, 7-0, but the match was more competitive than the score indicates.

Both the No. 1 and No. 3 singles matches were decided in third set super-tiebreakers, but both went the Longhorns way. At the top spot, senior Dinka Hadzic fell to 79th-ranked Mia Marovic in a 10-6 super-tiebreak after Marovic won the first set, 6-3, and Hadzic took the second, 6-4. In third singles, freshman Victoria Brymer won the first set, 6-2, over Kendra Strohm, but Strohm sent the match to a tiebreak with a 6-3 win in set two. Strohm barely pulled out the win with an 11-9 win in the breaker.

Texas had an easier time at second and fourth singles. 71st-ranked Petra Dizdar defeated sophomore Tara Simpson, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2, and Courtney Zauft bested senior Stephanie Svanfeldt, 6-2, 6-1 at the fourth spot.

Freshman Melinda Wong rebounded from an opening 6-0 loss to Texas' Kelly Baritot to force a tiebreak in the second set, but Baritot came through for the win that clinched the match.

Washington forfeited the No. 6 singles match for the fourth-straight match. Although sophomore Allison Rainey made her return for the Huskies in doubles play today, after a foot stress fracture sidelined her in early February, her singles return is still in the offing.

Rainey teamed up with Wong at No. 3 doubles and the two played the most competitive doubles match, but lost 8-5 to Dizdar and Ristine Olson. Texas also was victorious at first and second doubles to win their ninth-straight doubles point.

McCain left Washington over the summer after an eight-year stint in which she built the Huskies into a top-ten team, twice reaching the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2001 and 2004, and being named 2004 ITA National Coach of the Year. Current Husky Head Coach Jill Hultquist, a good friend and former doubles partner of McCain on the WTA tour was named as her replacement.

The Huskies (2-12) are back in action tomorrow against 23rd-ranked TCU. The Huskies and Horned Frogs meet at 10 a.m. PST.
