USC Slips 4-3 At Arizona

March 31, 2006

TUCSON, ARIZ. -- The USC men's tennis team was edged out in its Pac-10 opener with a tight 4-3 loss to host Arizona on Friday. The No. 51 Trojans fall to 7-9 overall and are 0-1 in Pac-10 play with the loss.

Arizona came out with an early advantage after claiming the doubles point with two close wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles slots. Adam Loucks / Garrett Snyder pulled out a doubles win for USC, but it wasn't enough to get the Trojans in the running for the first point of the match.

In singles action, Dejan Cvetkovic locked up the match 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles. Arizona pulled back ahead with wins at the No. 4 and 5 spots, and then Jeff Kazarian pulled the Trojans back closer with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 6. No. 1 singles player for the Wildcats, #58 Roger Matalonga, clinched the win for Arizona with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over USC's #88 Jamil Al-Agba, however, just before Kaes Van't Hof tacked up a win for the Trojans at his No. 3 position.

USC returns to action on Saturday (April 1) in Tempe with a 1 p.m. match at Arizona State.
