Cardinal Wins Fourth Straight With 5-1 Victory Over Oregon
April 2, 2006
Stanford won its fourth match in a row and second straight in the Pac-10 Conference as it beat Oregon 5-1 at the Taube Tennis Center. Today's match was a makeup of Friday's match that was cancelled due to rain. The Cardinal is now 11-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play while the Ducks fell to 6-8 and 0-2 in the Pac-10.
The Cardinal, which beat Washington yesterday 7-0, nearly scored its second straight shutout. The only loss came at No. 1 where Oregon's Markus Schiller upset Stanford's Matt Bruch in a hard-fought, three-set match, 7-6, 6-7, 1-0. Bruch, ranked 18th in the nation, had an impressive 20-5 singles record before the match, but Schiller was able to hold off the talented Cardinal freshman for the win.
The rest of the match was all Stanford. The Cardinal won in straight sets in the other five matches to record the win. James Pade continued his outstanding season with an easy 6-2, 6-2 win over Thomas Bieri at No. 2 while senior All-American KC Corkery was equally impressive with his 6-1, 6-1 victory over Gustavo Loza at No. 3. Pade is now 19-5 in 2006 while Corkery is 20-3.
James Wan ran his record to 7-0 in the No. 4 position as he beat Eric Pickard 6-2, 6-3. Wan is 15-5 overall in singles play this season. Freshman Blake Muller won his match at No. 5 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Fernando Freitas while Phil Kao was a 6-4, 6-4 winner at No. 6 over Vladimir Pino.
Stanford returns to action on Tuesday, April 4 when it hosts Boise State at 1:30 pm at the Taube Tennis Center.
