Arizona State's Mindy Cowles Named Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA STATE sophomore Mindy Cowles has been named the Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week for Mar. 28-Apr. 3, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
The Riverside, Calif., native entered the NCAA record books twice against UTEP last Wed., Mar. 29, when she hit three home runs and drove in 10 RBI on the day, tying her for second in NCAA history in both categories.
Cowles struck first in the opening inning, with a grand slam shot to right field to bring the Sun Devils to a 4-0 lead. In the second and third innings, she knocked three-run long balls over right center field to secure the 12-0, five-inning victory.
In the first game of the doubleheader vs. UTEP, Cowles went 1-for-2, scoring a run and drawing two walks.
In Conference play at Oregon and Oregon State, Cowles batted .500, scored five runs and posted a 1.625 slugging percentage. She holds the Pac-10 lead with 13 home runs on the season, and ranks sixth with an overall .712 slugging mark. Her 39 RBI are good for third in the league.
A second team 2005 All-Conference selection, Cowles started 42 games for the Sun Devils, pitching in five.
Arizona State (1-0, 37-3), hosts Washington and UCLA this week as Conference play continues.
This is Cowles' first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and Arizona State's 43rd weekly honor all-time.
