Candice Wiggins Named to the Kodak/WBCA All-America Team
April 4, 2006
Stanford sophomore Candice Wiggins was selected to the 2006 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Kodak/WBCA All-America Basketball Team, as announced by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and Eastman Kodak Company. This year's team marks the 32nd year of the longest running sponsorship in women's athletics. Selection committees in each of the eight WBCA geographical regions select ten of the top women's basketball players in the nation to be honored.
It is Wiggins' second Kodak/WBCA All-America selection, after earning the same award as a freshman last season. This year, Wiggins averaged 21.8 points per game, fifth-best in the nation and a new Stanford record. She became the 26th Cardinal woman to score 1,000 points and finished her sophomore campaign already owning the 17th-best career total at 1,352 points.
'These ten players have proven themselves both on and off the court during the 2005-2006 season,' said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. 'The WBCA is pleased to honor such fine student-athletes and we look forward to watching their future in women's basketball continue to unfold.'
'For the past 32 years, Kodak has partnered with the WBCA to celebrate the best in women's college basketball. Kodak is in the business of helping people capture and share memories. It is gratifying for us to help honor these student-athletes whose highlights have thrilled us for so many years,' said Greg Walker, Director and Vice President, Brand and Market Development at Kodak. 'We are proud to recognize the accomplishments of these young women and the positive recognition they bring to their schools, their communities and the game.'
Brooke Smith was also recognized as a member of the honorable mention Kodak/WBCA All-America Team. Smith was the Cardinal's leading rebounder with 7.5 boards per game and ranked second on the team in scoring with 17.2 points per game. Her 57.6% shooting average was 15th best in the nation and she became the 27th Cardinal player to score 1,000 points, ending her second season at Stanford with 1,049 points.
