Cougars Host Gonzaga, Travel To UCLA For Conference Series

A QUICK LOOK AT GONZAGA: The Bulldogs enter Tuesday's contest with a 20-10 record, riding a seven-game winning streak...Gonzaga is coming off a three-game sweep over Portland in their conference-opening series...Scott Campbell leads the way at the plate, hitting .418 while lefthander Patrick Donovan is the top starter with a 52 record and 3.36 a team the Bulldogs are hitting .323 and have a staff ERA of 4.71...Tuesday's game marks the fourth of seven meetings between WSU and Gonzaga this season, with the Cougars taking two of the first three...WSU leads the all-time series by a margin of 174-84-1, which includes the three games already played this season.

A QUICK LOOK AT UCLA: The Bruins will entertain UC Irvine Tuesday before hosting the Cougars in a three-game series over the weekend. ..UCLA enters the week with a 16-13 record, 1-2 in conference action, with an impressive sweep at No. 17 North Carolina State and taking two of three against No. 19 Mississippi...the Bruins dropped two of three at Washington last weekend, the lone win coming in Saturday's 3-2, 11-inning contest...The Bruins are hitting .269 as a team while the pitching staff has a combined 3.40 ERA...Hector Ambriz has pulled double duty, hitting a team-leading .349 while also posting a 4-4 record with a 3.42 ERA.

WSU-UCLA ALL-TIME SERIES: UCLA leads the all-time series, 29-12, including a 15-6 advantage in Pac-10 play since 1999...WSU had its lone conference win last season against UCLA, a 10-7 win in Game Two of the series at Pullman...when playing in Los Angeles, the Bruins hold a 16-6 edge, dating back to 1967.

GAMETIME CHANGE FOR CALIFORNIA SERIES: Friday's Game Two of next week's Pacific-10 Conference home series against California (Apr. 14) has been moved to a 6 p.m. first pitch...the game was originally scheduled for a 2 p.m. start but was moved back to a 6 p.m. start...Thursday's game remains at a 6 p.m. start while Saturday's finale remains unchanged with a 1 p.m. first pitch.

ARIZONA STATE RECAP: WSU captured a series-opening 6-1 victory over the No. 14 Sun Devils, although it took two days to complete...two partial light outages, the second occurring with two outs in the top of the third, forced the suspension of Thursday's opener...when play resumed Friday, Thursday's starter Jared Prince returned to the mound and picked up his fourth win of the season, limited ASU to just four hits and one run...the Sun Devils took Game Two 8-3 then escaped with a narrow, 2-1, victory in the getaway game...for the series WSU hit .255, with Paul Gran (.500, 6-12) leading the way.

MILLER CLIMBING CAREER HITS CHART: Left fielder Jay Miller continued he assault on the Cougar all-time hits list by moving into second place following the Arizona State series...the senior from Bellevue currently has 274 career hits, second on the all-time list behind only Mike Kinkade's (1992-95) 304...Miller needs 30 more hits to tie Kinkade, currently the only Cougar to break 300 career hits.

KOST CONTINUES STRONG START: Steve Kost continues his impressive sophomore campaign as the lefthander has yet to surrender an earned run...Kost has made nine appearances this season, allowing six unearned runs on nine hits...the majority of those came in his first outing of the season at Hawaii-Hilo, when he worked 2/3 of an inning, allowing four hits and all six unearned runs...since then he has made eight appearances, allowing a combined five hits and no runs while striking out seven...last Friday against No. 14 Arizona State he worked the final three innings, allowing three hits and zero runs while striking out two to earn his first save of the year.

WSU LEADS PAC-10 PITCHERS: The Cougar pitching staff continues to lead the Pac-10 in ERA following then latest release of conference statistics...the Cougar staff ERA of 3.40 has them in a tie with this week's foe, UCLA...Oregon State is close behind in third with an ERA of 3.43...junior Wayne Daman is seventh in ERA (2.84) and tied for fourth in wins (5)...also among the pitchers leaders are junior Nick Ison, who is second in opposing batting average (.197), tied for seventh in wins (4) and fourth in fewest walks allowed (9)...freshman Jared Prince (0.36) would lead the conference in ERA but is 5.0 innings shy of the qualifying standard...Prince would also rank in the Top 10 in opposing batting average (4th, .202) and fewest walks allowed (1st, 2).

COUGS AMONG CONFERENCE LEADERS: Offensively, WSU has moved into a tie for the top spot in the Pac-10 hitting race with a .326 average, tied with USC (.326)...the Cougs also lead the conference in runs scored (239), doubles (72), on base percentage (.409), hit by pitch (56), stolen bases (59) and attempts (81)... senior Jay Miller (.430) leads the Pac-10 in hitting followed by freshman teammate Jared (.429)..Miller also leads the conference in doubles (20), hits (55) and total bases (75), while Prince is first in on-base percentage (.524) and eighth in hits (42).

COUGAR NOTES: The Cougars have gone 3-3 over their last six games, taking the series against No. 17 Stanford and getting just one game against No. 14 Arizona State...WSU has collected 18 double-digit hitting game so far this season and has 20-plus hits on three occasions, including a season-best 23 against Chicago State (3/7)...sophomore Nick Cebula has allowed just one hit over his last five appearances (4.0 innings)... he has also not allowed a run over his last seven appearances...freshman Travis Coulter saw his 10-game hitting streak snapped in the finale against Arizona State...Coulter did not start after getting hit in the leg by a ball during batting practice...he made a pinch-hit appearance late in the contest and reached on a fielder's choice, ending his streak... Coulter was 15-for-39 (.385) in the stretch scoring 13 runs... junior Nick Ison missed last week's start against Arizona State due to a sore shoulder...Ison will not throw against UCLA with a return set for California...junior Wayne Daman Jr. matched his career-high with nine strikeouts against Arizona was the fourth time this season Daman has fanned nine in a game...since returning from an injury that forced him to miss four games in mid March, sophomore Paul Gran has been swinging a hot bat...he currently has the team's longest hitting streak at nine games, batting .351 (13-37), scoring nine runs in those nine games...sophomore lefty Steve Kost ran his scoreless string to eight appearances (8.0 innings), with two solid relief efforts against ASU...he picked up his first save this season with 3.0 innings of relief in Game One against the Sun Devils...junior Ryan Krauser is hitting .421 (8-19) through his first five games this season and missing the opening 24 games with an elbow injury...senior Jay Miller has hit safely in 27 of the Cougars' 30 games, including a career-best 18 game hitting streak to start the season...Miller also leads the team in multi-hit games (19)... sophomore Jim Murphy has hit safely in 11 of WSU's last 12 games, batting .381 (16-42) in that span...freshman Jared Prince continues to lead the team in RBIs with 30 on the season...sophomore Simi Reynolds had three hits and an RBI in WSU's 6-1 win over Arizona State in the series was the sixth multi-hit game of the season for Reynolds.
