Twenty-Two Former Bruins Make MLS Opening Day Rosters
April 5, 2006
A total of 22 former UCLA soccer players made 2006 Major League Soccer (MLS) opening day rosters this past weekend, bringing UCLA's all-time total of MLS players to a national-best 46 in the league's 11-year history.
Half of those players earned starting nods for their teams in last weekend's openers, including two rookies - Jonathan Bornstein of Chivas USA and Marvell Wynne of the New York Red Bulls. No other school in the nation produced two rookie starters. Other starters were Greg Vanney of FC Dallas, Chad Barrett of the Chicago Fire, Sasha Victorine of the Kansas City Wizards, Matt Reis of the New England Revolution, Chris Henderson of New York, Ante Razov of Chivas USA and the Los Angeles Galaxy trio of Kevin Hartman, Cobi Jones and Pete Vagenas. Barrett scored the first goal of the MLS season, striking in the 12th minute of Chicago's game against Dallas.
Also making the opening day rosters were Matt Taylor of Chivas USA, Jordan Harvey of Colorado, Alex Yi of Dallas, Zach Wells and Patrick Ianni of Houston, Mike Enfield of the Galaxy, Nelson Akwari of Real Salt Lake, Leonard Griffin of Chicago, Frankie Hejduk of Columbus, Nick Rimando of D.C. United and Jimmy Conrad of Kansas City. Regular starters Conrad, Hejduk and Rimando were unavailable due to injury.
