Men's 4x800m Relay Team Shines At Texas Relays

April 6, 2006

The USC men's 4x800m relay team ran a blazing time of 7:18.58 today (April 6) to finish second and highlight the first day of action for the Trojans at the 79th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays hosted by the University of Texas at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Tex.

The Trojans' time was three seconds faster than their winning time at the Texas Relays last season (7:21.75) when they set the Myers Stadium record. Oral Roberts set a new stadium record today with a time of 7:17.02 to edge the Trojans and win the event.

USC's foursome in the event was junior DeSean Cunningham, junior Raphael Asafo-Agyei, senior Tomasz Babiszkiewicz and sophomore Duane Solomon. All but Cunningham ran in the race for USC last year, as he replaced the graduated Anthony Heckman. Asafo-Agyei and Solomon both ran 1:48.2 splits and Solomon battled on the final leg with Oral Roberts' Prince Mumba, the number one ranked 800m runner in college this season. The third-place team, South Alabama, finished four and a half seconds behind the Trojans.

Also competing today for the Trojans at the Texas Relays were senior Tunisia Johnson in the women's 400m IH preliminaries and sophomore Kai Kelley in the men's 400m IH preliminaries.

At the UCLA Rafer Johnson/JJK Invite today at Drake Stadium in Westwood, Calif., junior Adam Midles won the men's hammer with a throw of 211-2. Junior Kevin Swartz placed 14th with a throw of 164-7 and sophomore Jekabs Sliede placed 19th with a career-best throw of 151-11.

For the women's hammer throwers, USC freshman Eva Orban threw a season-best 213-9 to place second. Her throw is the second best in school history. Junior Julia Rozenfeld finished third in the women's hammer with a throw of 193-0 and junior Alexandrea Williams finished 11th with a career-best throw of 166-2.
