Blue Team Heads to Arizona for Season Finale
April 7, 2006
The fifth-ranked UCLA men's golf Blue Team heads to Arizona for the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, hosted at Talking Stick Golf Course in Scottsdale, AZ.
The Bruin Blue Team has won five tournaments this season and the program has won nine overall in 2005-06. The school record for single season tournament victories is 13 set in the 1981-82 season.
'This is the final Blue Team event of the season,' said Head Coach O.D. Vincent. 'It's a very good field on a very good course. We won the tournament a couple of years ago, and we hope to win it again this time.'
In 2004, the Bruins won this event on their way to capturing nine team titles and finishing second in the NCAA Championship.
One junior, three sophomores and a freshman make up the UCLA lineup this week. One player from this group is expected to advance to postseason play, beginning at the Pac-10 Championships, Apr. 24-26.
Junior Peter Campbell has not played since tying for 27th place at the Battle of Monarch Bay on Mar. 12. He enters the Cowboy Classic with a stroke average of 75.0 and boasts a second place finish at the Pala Mesa Invitational in February. In 2004 at this event, he played the final 36 holes in five-under par and tied for 13th.
Sophomores Craig Leslie, Brandon Christianson and Matt Marshall have each enjoyed solid seasons. Leslie won the Pala Mesa event and finished second in the Cougar Invitational. Christianson has recorded six straight Top 20 finishes, capped by a third place finish at Monarch Bay. Marshall tied for first with teammate Lucas Lee at Monarch Bay.
Freshman James Lee tied for fourth at the CordeValle Collegiate in October and is averaging 75.1.
'For those players playing in the post-season, (the Cowboy Classic) will be a great tune-up,' said Vincent. 'The Pac-10 Championship will be played in the desert (Bighorn CC) and the NCAA West Regional also will be played in the desert (Arizona National).'
