April 7, 2006
TEMPE, Ariz. - The UCLA softball team (31-3, 3-1 Pac-10) defeated Arizona State by a score of 7-4 on Friday night at ASU's Farrington Stadium, capitalizing on two home runs from senior Andrea Duran as well as homers from Emily Zaplatosch and Krista Colburn. Anjelica Selden struck out 12 batters for her 18th victory of the season.
For the fourth time this season, senior Andrea Duran hit a leadoff home run, this time clearing the Farrington Stadium fence just left of the scoreboard to put the Bruins up 1-0 after one at-bat. Krista Colburn followed with a ground ball single just to the right of the bag at second base. The Bruins earned another base runner when Caitlin Benyi was hit by a Katie Burkhart pitch. The pair advanced into scoring position on an Emily Zaplatosch sacrifice bunt, and advanced again on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Jodie Legaspi, increasing the Bruin lead to 2-0 after half an inning of play.
UCLA's offense struck again in the top of the third inning as Colburn connected on a one-out solo home run to straightaway centerfield. After Benyi reached on a fielding error by ASU, Emily Zaplatosch crushed her fourth home run of the season well over the right field fence for a two-run shot, giving the Bruins a 5-0 lead after two and a half innings of play.
The Sun Devils got on the board in the bottom of the third inning, as Anjelica Selden issued two two-out walks before Kaitlin Cochran notched the first ASU hit of the game with a home run to left to make the score 5-3.
In the top of the fourth, the Bruins countered with a two-out rally of their own. Tara Henry notched an infield single, prompting ASU to change pitchers, bringing in Desiree Serrano, who gave up the second home run of the game for Duran, a shot off the scoreboard in left field to make the score 7-3.
Rhiannon Baca cut the UCLA lead back down to three runs when she put the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth inning off of the left field scoreboard, bringing the score to 7-4, UCLA.
That score held to the bottom of the seventh inning when the Sun Devils loaded the bases on a walk to Michelle Smith, a single from Jackie Vasquez and and a walk to Katie Cochran. Mindy Cowles then struck out for the second out of the inning before Baca was called out on strikes to end the game, becoming Seldens' 12th strikeout victim of the night.
The Bruins return to action on Saturday evening with a 7 pm first pitch at Arizona.
