April 7, 2006
LOS ANGELES - The 11th-ranked UCLA men's tennis team extended its winning streak to four in a row Friday, dispatching of No. 12 Stanford, 6-1 in a Pac-10 showdown at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins, who lost to the Cardinal, 4-3 in a non-conference match back in February, improve to 14-4 overall and 3-0 in the Pac-10. Stanford falls to 12-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
UCLA set the tone Friday with a strong performance in doubles play. Although Stanford won the first match to finish, posting an 8-4 win at the No. 2 spot, the Bruins were leading at court Nos. 1 and 3. After third-ranked Philipp Gruendler and Benjamin Kohlloeffel took an 8-5 win at court No. 1, UCLA clinched the point when Jeremy Drean and Mathieu Dehaine downed Stanford's James Wan/Jon Wong, 8-4 at court No. 3.
Bruin junior Chris Surapol put the Bruins ahead 2-0 shortly after singles play began, as he cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Blake Muller at court No. 5. Next off was court No. 1, where Kohlloeffel, the nation's top-ranked singles player, downed 14th-ranked Matt Bruch. Kohlloeffel had won the first set 6-4 and was serving up 4-1 in the second when Bruch had to retire due to injury.
UCLA freshman Michael Look clinched the match for UCLA at court No. 6, registering a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Stanford's Phil Kao.
With the Bruins up 4-0 and the match already decided, Stanford got on the board when 24th-ranked KC Corkery downed No. 78 Dehaine, 7-5, 6-3 at court No. 3.
UCLA claimed the final two matches of the day, as Haythem Abid (court No. 2) and Philipp Gruendler (court No. 4) survived after splitting the first two sets. Abid downed James Pade, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, while Gruendler took a 4-6, 6-4, (10-7) decision over Wan.
UCLA returns to the LATC tomorrow, hosting No. 24 Cal at 1:00 p.m.
