Bruin Rowers Impressive Against Minnesota

April 8, 2006

On a cloudy morning in Marina del Rey, the UCLA women's rowing team had an impressive showing against an experienced Long Beach Masters crew and cross-regional rivals, Minnesota. The Bruins entered four boats in the competition including the second varsity eight, varsity eight and two varsity fours.

The first race of the day was a V4 exhibition race against the Long Beach Masters crew. Two varsity four boats raced against the LB Masters, which consisted of two former U.S. national team members and a repeat Canadian national champion. UCLA's `A' boat took an early lead in lane one and maintained the lead for the entire course. The battle for second place was close until the finish when UCLA's `B' boat used a final sprint to edge out the experienced masters crew.

In the 2V8 race, UCLA used aggressive rowing to edge out the Golden Gophers. After a clean start, the Bruins found open water by the 500m mark. However, the Gophers climbed back into the race as they caught up in the second 500. In this close battle, UCLA launched a counter attack to regain the lead and held on for a two-second victory.

In the most exciting race of the day, UCLA's 14th ranked varsity eight was able to squeak by 18th ranked Minnesota for a two-tenth of a second victory. Battling against increasing headwind, UCLA once again had a good start off the line. The race was a close seesaw battle with UCLA leading for most of the way. With the photo finish too close to call, the referees had to review the finish line video to determine a winner. After reviewing the tape, it was decided that UCLA finished with a time of 6:30.5 to Minnesota's 6:30.7.

All races took place on a 2000m course with outgoing tide. UCLA's cross-regional victories will be taken into account as the NCAA selection committee decides which teams to invite to the NCAA championships held in the end of May.

Varsity Eight Results:
1. UCLA - 6:30.5
2. Minnesota - 6:30.7

Second Varsity Eight Results:
1. UCLA - 6:33.5
2. Minnesota - 6:35.8

Varsity Four Results:
1. UCLA `A' - 7:22.3
2. UCLA `B' - 7:34.6
3. Long Beach Masters - 7:38.2

UP NEXT -- On Friday, April 14th, UCLA will travel to Redwood Shores, Calif. for the two-day Windermere Stanford Regatta. The Bruins will face top teams including Tennessee, Central Florida and Clemson.
