Bruin Softball Downs Wildcats, 2-1
April 8, 2006
TUCSON, Ariz. - Four first-inning hits put the Bruins on the board and a second run in the fourth inning were enough to give UCLA (32-3, 4-1 Pac-10) a 2-1 victory over Arizona on Saturday night at Hillenbrand Stadium. Lisa Dodd earned the win for the Bruins while Anjelica Selden was credited with UCLA's first save of the 2006 season.
In the top of the first inning, Andrea Duran led off with a line-drive double just fair down the third base line. She was unable to advance on an infield single by Caitlin Benyi, and the Bruins finished with runners at the corners and two outs after a fielders choice hit by Emily Zaplatosch with the out at second base. A single through the left side of the infield by Jodie Legaspi plated the Bruins first run. UCLA would load the bases on a single to left by Lisa Dodd, but came away with a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning.
The Bruins plated another run in the fourth inning when Legaspi led off with a double and was sacrificed to third by Dodd before a Whitney Holum single dropped into shallow left field for UCLA's second run of the game.
A one-out solo home run by Callista Balko in the bottom of the sixth inning brought the Wildcats to with a run. Balko's homer was just the second hit of the night given up by Dodd, who had a no-hitter through four innings in the circle. Dodd struck out Laine Roth for the second out of the inning before Jenae Leles doubled down the left field line, prompting UCLA head coach Sue Enquist to bring in Anjelica Selden to finish off the inning. Selden threw four pitches to strike out Taryne Mowatt to end the inning.
Dodd earned the win in the circle, her 14th of the season, allowing just three hits and striking out one, while Selden notched UCLA's first save of the 2006 season, striking out two and recording the final four outs of the game.
The Bruins and Wildcats return to the field at Hillenbrand Stadium on Sunday at 1 pm for the final game of the weekend set.
