Cardinal Rebounds With 4-3 Win at USC

April 8, 2006

Coming off a 6-1 loss at UCLA yesterday and playing without its No. 1 singles player, the Cardinal rebounded in impressive fashion today by beating USC 4-3 at Marks Stadium in Los Angeles. Stanford, ranked 12th in the nation, improved to 12-3 overall and 3-1 in the Pac-10 Conference while the Trojans dropped to 7-12 overall and 0-4 in league play.

Stanford was playing today without Matt Bruch, who suffered an injury in yesterday's match at UCLA. After losing the doubles point to the Trojans, the Cardinal won four of the first five singles matches to record the win. Senior KC Corkery, playing in the No. 2 position, clinched the match for Stanford by beating the Trojan's Jamil Al-Agba in three sets. Corkery lost the first set 6-4, but came back to easily put Al-Agba away with a 6-1, 6-1 drubbing in the final two sets. Stanford led 3-2 when Corkery's victory clinched the match.

USC won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to win the doubles point. Stanford's No. 1 doubles team of James Pade and Blake Muller recorded an 8-4 win over USC's Jamil Al-Agba and Dejan Cvetkovic, but the Trojans came back to win the next two matches. Adam Loucks and Garrett Snyder beat Stanford's KC Corkery and Phil Kao at No. 2, 8-3 and USC's No. 3 team of Jeff Kazarian and Kaes Van't Hof gave USC the doubles point with an 8-6 win over Stanford's James Wan and Jon Wong.

Stanford tied the match at 1-1 after Pade beat Cvetkovic, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. USC took a 2-1 lead when Loucks recorded a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Muller at No. 4. The Cardinal then reeled off three straight wins to close out the match. Wong beat Whit Livingston at No. 6, 6-0, 7-6 and Wan defeated Van't Hof, 7-6, 6-4 at No. 3, setting the stage for Corkery's clincher.

The Cardinal will play three home matches this week before closing out the dual match season at Cal on Apr. 22. Stanford will host Fresno State (Apr. 11), Arizona (Apr. 14) and Arizona State (Apr. 15) at the Taube Tennis Center.
