No. 8/9 Stanford Downs Oregon, 7-3

Stanford, Calif. - Freshman pitcher Missy Penna hammered a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning to give No. 8/9 Stanford (29-6, 3-2) the win over Oregon (17-13, 0-3). Penna collected her 18th win in the circle, striking out three batters in seven innings.
Senior outfielder Catalina Morris was walked on base to start the bottom of the first inning for the Cardinal. Senior infielder Lauren Lappin then hit a double to left center, scoring Morris from second base for a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore infielder Michelle Smith knocked a single to left field to get on base in the bottom of the fifth inning and later stole second base. Sophomore infielder Erin Howe hit a single in the center field pocket to advance Smith to third base. Sophomore Becky McCullough followed with a single up the middle, scoring Smith from third to put Stanford ahead, 2-0.
In the top of the sixth inning, Oregon's Beth Boskovich got on base with a single to right field. Breanne Sabol was later walked to advance Boskovich. Lovena Chaput stepped up and knocked a home run just over the right field fence to score all three and put Oregon up, 3-2.
Morris hit a single to the second baseman to get on base in the bottom of the sixth inning and junior outfielder Jackie Rinehart followed with a slap hit to the third baseman. Both runners advanced on a passed ball by the Oregon catcher. Lappin was then intentionally walked to load the bases. With three runners on and no outs, freshman infielder Maddy Coon hit a single just over the shortstop's head to score Morris from third and tied the game at 3-3. With one out and the bases loaded, Penna hammered a grand slam over the left field fence, her third home run of the season. The Cardinal held the Ducks hitless in the top of the seventh inning to claim the 7-3 victory.
In seven innings, Penna struck out three batters, walked two and allowed six hits. Penna improves to 18-2 on the season. Penna was also 1-3 at the plate with one run and four RBI. Morris was 1-1 with two runs and two walks and Smith was 1-2 with two runs and one walk.
Stanford will host one more game versus the Ducks tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
