Bruin Softball Trounces Arizona, 8-3
April 9, 2006
TUCSON, Ariz. - All three of UCLA's senior starters homered in their last career game at Arizona's Hillenbrand Stadium as the Bruins (33-3, 5-1 Pac-10) won 8-3. Andrea Duran homered on the second pitch of the game, Caitlin Benyi homered two batters later and Emily Zaplatosch rapped a leadoff shot in the fifth inning en route to the Bruin win.
UCLA didn't waste any time getting on the board as Andrea Duran put the second pitch of the game from Arizona's Taryne Mowatt off the top of the batters eye in centerfield for her 10th home run of the season. After Krista Colburn was hit by a pitch. Caitlin Benyi put two more UCLA runs on the board with her eighth home run of the year, a shot over the fence in right center field.
The Wildcats answered in the bottom of the second inning as Selden opened the frame by hitting Jenae Leles and Laine Roth with pitches before giving up Mowatt's first career home run to tie the game at 3-3 after two innings.
The top of the third saw Duran lead off with a single to left, chasing Mowatt from the circle as Mike Candrea brought Alicia Hollowell in off the bench for her first relief appearance of the season. After Colburn sacrificed Duran to second base, Caitlin Benyi connected on a single to left, scoring Duran, advancing to second on the throw to the plate and going to third on an error by catcher Callista Balko. Emily Zaplatosch followed with a single deep to shortstop, scoring Benyi to give UCLA a 5-3 lead.
UCLA manufactured two more runs in the fourth inning as Dodd led off with a single to left before being replaced by pinch runner Celina Rubalcaba. Jaisa Creps sacrificed her to second base before Ashley Herrera drew a one-out walk. Pinch-hitter Whitney Holum grounded out but advanced the pair of runners into scoring position, bringing up Duran, who was intentionally walked to load the bases. Colburn then grounded to shortstop Kristie Fox, who mis-handled the ball, bringing in Rubalcaba and Herrera to increase the Bruin lead to 7-3.
After Zaplatosch led off the top of the fifth inning with her fifth home run of the season, a shot over the left field fence, the Bruins led 8-3 and Arizona brought their third pitcher of the day, Leslie Wolfe, into the game. Jaisa Creps earned an infield hit off of Wolfe before a lefty slap-hit single by Herrera gave the Bruins two runners on base with two outs, but Tara Henry was unable to advance the pair, leaving UCLA up 8-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Anjelica Selden earned the complete-game victory, striking out seven for her 19th win of the season.
The Bruins continue on the road next weekend, traveling to Seattle for a Friday/Saturday set with Washington. Game times are 3 pm on Friday, 2 pm on Saturday.
