California Track and Field Competes at Johnny Mathis Invite

SAN FRANCISCO - The California track and field team competed at the Johnny Mathis Invitational on Saturday at San Francisco State.
Freshman Francesca Weems finished third in the 200m with her time of 25.05. Her teammate freshman Lollie Onipede finished two spots behind in fifth, with her time of 25.11. Redshirt Tifani Grimes won her preliminary heat of 100m hurdles with her time of 14.35 and she finished second in the finals (14.77). In the 400m hurdles, freshman Evelyn Smith was clocked at 1:04.19 to finish third. Senior Lisa Sandoval was clocked at 12:27.80 in the 3000m steeplechase.
Grimes continued her success in the women's field events, winning the women's high jump with her mark of 1.73m (5-08.00). Senior Qadriyyah Abduallah finished second with her jump of 11.75m (38-06.75) in the triple jump. Junior Kelechi Anyanwu won both the shot put (47-10) and the discus (159-08). Sophomore Daisy Van Ravenswaay finished second in the discus behind Anyanwu with her mark of 151-04. Junior Alex Hunnings finished second in the hammer (157-06). Senior Trinety White won the javelin with her throw of 119-10.
On the men's side Freshman Jordan Paul won the 110m hurdles with his time of 14.95. Sophomore Micah Parker (9:29.20) and freshman Stephen Potty (9:39.50) finished second and third respectively, in the 3000m steeplechase. Sophomore Sean Carey finished sixth in the 800m with his time of 1:53.46. In the 400m, sophomore Alex Beitashour finished ninth, after he was clocked at 51.03. Potty crossed the finish line at 3:58.48 in the 1500m for third.
In the men's field events, sophomore Ed Wright won the high jump with his mark of 6-08 (2.03m) and sophomore Donny Appanaitis finished second in the pole vault (14-11). Sophomore Craig Kent was marked at 53-11.75 in the shot put and 167-05 in the discus. Junior Kurt Seefeld finished one spot behind Kent in the discus with his throw of 163-06.
California will return home next weekend for the ninth annual Brutus Hamilton Invitational on Saturday, April 15 at Edwards Stadium.
