No. 8/9 Cardinal Falls To Ducks, 9-2

Stanford, Calif. - No. 8/9 Stanford Softball (29-7, 3-3) fell to Oregon (18-13, 1-3) today, 9-2, in the second of two games against the Ducks this weekend. Oregon maintained the lead from the third inning on, scoring six runs in the top fourth inning. Senior catcher Lauren Lappin hit 2-4 for the Cardinal with one run, while freshman shortstop Maddy Coon hit 2-3 at the plate with one run.

After two scoreless innings, Oregon's Suzie Barnes slammed a triple to right field to get on base in the top of the third inning. Breanne Sabol hit a sacrifice bunt to score Sabol for a 1-0 Duck lead.

Sophomore outfielder Anna Beardman was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the third inning to get on base. Senior Catalina Morris hit a single to right field and Beardman advanced to third base on the throw, but the Cardinal hitters couldn't bring them home.

Kayleen Hudson opened the fourth inning for the Ducks with a home run over the left field fence. Pinch hitter Ann Marie Topps followed with a double to left field and Dani Baird hit a single up the middle to advance Topps. Beth Boskovich then knocked a single to left field, scoring Topps. Barnes singled to right field to load the bases and Sabol hammered a triple to center field to score all three runners. Elena Chaput was walked on base, then Hudson hit a single to center field to score Barnes from third base. Lappin picked off a runner at first base to end the inning, 7-0.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Lappin knocked a base hit to left field and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Coon hit a single to right field, moving Lappin to third. Freshman pitcher/infielder Missy Penna got on base with a single to the shortstop, scoring Lappin for the Cardinal's first run. At the end of the fourth inning, Oregon led, 7-1.

Coon hit a double to center field to open up the bottom of the sixth inning and Penna reached with a single down the right line to advance Coon. Junior infielder Lindsay Key then knocked a double down the left line to score Coon.

In the top of the seventh inning, Joanna Gail hit a double to center field to get on base for the Ducks. Sari-Jane Jenkins followed with another double to center field, scoring pinch runner Jorgensen. Baird advanced Jenkins to third base and Boskovich brought her home with a single to right field. Sophomore Lauren Nydam entered the game to pitch midway through the seventh inning, assisting on an out to end the inning, 9-2.

Morris hit a single just over the shortstop to get on base in the bottom of the seventh inning. Junior outfielder Jackie Rinehart reached on a fielder's choice and Lappin knocked a base hit to the second baseman. Rinehart advanced to second on the play on an error by the second baseman, but the inning ended runless for the Cardinal as the Ducks claimed a 9-2 win.

Starter Missy Penna struck out four batters, walked one and allowed five hits in just over three innings. Senior Laura Severson struck out one batter, walked one and allowed 11 hits in two and a half innings and Nydam allowed no hits and no walks in less than an inning.

Lappin was 2-4 at the plate with one run, while Coon was 2-3 with one run and one walk. Penna was 2-3 with one RBI and Key was 1-1 with one RBI.

In three games over the weekend between No. 6 Oregon State and Oregon, Morris hit .500 with two runs in eight at-bats. Penna averaged .444 at the plate with five RBI, one run, and one home run, as well as a .778 slugging percentage. Penna was also 2-1 in the circle, striking out ten batters in 17 innings. Coon also hit .444 with two runs and one RBI.
