Patrick Turner Catches Two TDs In USC's Trojan Huddle Scrimmage

April 9, 2006

Wide receiver Patrick Turner caught a pair of touchdown passes, including one each from quarterbacks Mark Sanchez and Michael McDonald, to highlight USC's annual Trojan Huddle spring football scrimmage on Sunday (April 9) before 15,000 fans at the Coliseum.

The 94-play scrimmage saw the offense directed by McDonald post a 22-19 win over Sanchez's offense.

Turner, who had 6 receptions for 85 yards overall, grabbed a 29-yard scoring toss from Sanchez and an 18-yarder from McDonald.

Sanchez, who has been running with the first team offense after John David Booty was sidelined with back surgery earlier this spring, completed 13-of-21 passes for 146 yards.

McDonald, a one-time walk-on now on scholarship, was 19-of-27 for 191 yards with 3 TDs and an interception. His other touchdown throws went 10 yards to tight end Fred Davis and 26 yards to wide receiver Brad Walker. Walker had 7 catches for 75 yards on the day.

Placekicker Mario Danelo nailed both of his field goal tries, 30 and 38 yards.

Brandon Hancock, one of four fullbacks who had to carry the rushing load because of injuries to USC's tailback corps, ran for a 15-yard TD. He had 21 yards on 6 carries overall. Fellow fullback Ryan Powdrell, a converted linebacker, ran for 81 yards on 10 carries, including a 51-yard burst.

Safety Ryan Ting returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown.

USC's defense came up with 5 turnovers, including 4 fumble recoveries, and also blocked a PAT. Linebacker Clay Matthews had a fumble recovery, a forced fumble and an interception, safety Brandon Ting recovered a fumble and blocked a PAT, and defensive end Kyle Moore and defensive tackle Jermyah Graves both recovered fumbles.

Linebackers Rey Maualuga and Kaluka Maiava each had 9 tackles, while linebacker Keith Rivers added 7 stops.

'It was a good day today,' said USC head coach Pete Carroll. 'We moved the ball around. The quarterbacks got a realistic feel. Sanchez had a very solid day. Turner looked good. Powdrell showed he can run the ball. And I loved the turnovers created by the defense. There were a lot of bright spots. We got in some good, hard work.'

USC, which concludes its spring drills on April 14, opens its 2006 season at Arkansas on Sept. 2.
