Washington State Tennis Blanks Portland

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State women's tennis team swept the Portland Pilots (3-13), 7-0, Sunday at the Stadium Way Tennis Center.
The Cougars (12-11, 0-6) bounced back after two earlier losses in the weekend. The Cougars earned the doubles point with the help from captain Ekaterina Burduli and teammate Marjolein van de Ven. The tandem defeated Laura Leoni and Jenna Tanzer, 8-1 in the No. 2 position.
Sophomore Burduli, nationally-ranked 93rd, helped the Cougars jump out to a 2-0 advantage after she defeated Lindsey Griffin, 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 slot.
In the No. 6 position, Aleksandra Stefanova squared off against Anna Gullickson. Stefanova took the first set easily, 6-0. In the second set, Stefanova found herself down 1-2, before rallying five straight games to win the final set, 6-2 and put the Cougars up 3-0.
Junior transfer van de Ven clinched the match for the Cougars in the No. 4 slot. The Delft, Netherlands native defeated Jenna Tanzer, 6-1, 6-0. The win improves van de Ven to 23 wins this season. She enters the Cougars Top-10 single season victory tied for seventh place with eight other women.
The Cougars will be back on the courts as they host South Alabama Sunday, April, 16 at the Stadium Way Tennis Center at 11 a.m.
