April 11, 2006
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA senior Andrea Duran has been named the Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week for Apr. 4-10, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
The Selma, Calif., native hit .545 for the weekend, going 6-for-11 with five runs scored, a double, three home runs, four RBI and a 1.455 slugging percentage. She was also perfect defensively on eight chances.
Duran led off Friday's game against No. 9/8 Arizona State by putting a full-count pitch over the left field fence for her eighth home run of the season. She homered for a second time in the game with a two-run shot in the fourth inning, securing the Bruins' 7-4 victory.
On Saturday night at No. 2/3 Arizona, Duran led off the game with a double, coming around to score UCLA's first run of the night in its 2-1 win.
Just as on Friday night, Duran opened Sunday's game at Arizona with a home run to centerfield on the second pitch of the game. She then led off the third inning with a single and came around to score. Intentionally walked in the fourth, Duran singled to lead off the sixth inning in the 8-3 win.
UCLA's two victories over Arizona were the Wildcats' first home losses of the 2006 season.
The Bruins (5-1, 33-3), travel to Seattle to play Washington for two games during Conference rivalry weekend.
This is Duran's second Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and UCLA's 93rd weekly honor all-time. So far this season, she is the only player to receive two Player of the Week awards.
