April 12, 2006
This Week: The No. 3 Golden Bears face No. 11 Wisconsin in the Stanford Invitational this Friday, April 14, at 11:30 a.m. PDT at Redwood Shores. The Bears will be looking for a victory after losing to No. 2 Stanford in the San Diego Crew Classic two weeks ago. The loss to the Cardinal was Cal's first regular season varsity loss since the Bears fell to Washington in a dual race, April 24, 2004.
Cal vs. Wisconsin: The Bears last faced Wisconsin at the 2005 Windermere Crew Classic when Cal's varsity eight defeated the Badgers by 14 seconds. The Bears also faced Wisconsin in the 2003 Windermere Crew Classic with the Bears varsity eight defeating the Badgers by a mere one second. Prior to that, the Bears faced Wisconsin in the 2002 Stanford Invitational, winning the varsity eight race by six seconds and the JV eight race by 10 seconds.
San Diego Crew Classic Recap (April 1-2, 2006): In one of the closest races of the regatta, then-No. 2 California narrowly lost to then-No. 4 Stanford. The Cardinal got out to fast start, and had a two second lead after 1000 meters. The Bears fought hard to come back, but ended up losing to Stanford by two seconds. In the JV grand final, the Bears fielded two boats; the Cal A boat finished with a time of 6:10.30 and the nearest competitor, other than the Cal B, finished 25 seconds behind. In the freshman eight race, Cal rowed to an open water victory over Stanford and Orange Coast College, leading by six and seven seconds respectively.
Upcoming Races: After this weekend the Bears have two regular season races remaining on their schedule. Cal will face Washington on Saturday, April 22 and Stanford on Saturday, April 29. The Bears have defeated Washington five of the past seven years, including a three second varsity eight win last year. Cal has defeated Stanford 15 consecutive years and 55 of the 73 times the two teams faced each other, dating back to 1902.
