Cal Baseball Wins at Washington State, 9-2
April 13, 2006
PULLMAN, WASH. - California junior center fielder Brennan Boesch knocked a pair of two-run homers and junior right-hander Brandon Morrow improved his record to 7-0, allowing two runs and only three hits over seven innings, as the Golden Bears opened a three-game Pac-10 series with a 9-2 victory over Washington State Thursday evening at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman, Wash.
With the loss the Cougars fall to 22-13 overall, 4-6 in conference play. Cal ended a four-game skid to improve to 17-16, 5-5 in Pac-10 action.
After retiring the first two Cal hitters, Cougar starter Jared Prince surrendered a soft single to left off the bat of Allen Craig. Boesch then drove the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first the Cougars had runners at second and third with two outs. On a 1-2 pitch to Simi Reynolds, Ryan Krauser broke from third and was caught trying to steal home, ending the WSU threat.
The Bears added a single run in the second on junior Brett Munster's sacrifice fly to center that scored Mike Van Winden, who walked to open the inning. In the third, Boesch connected for another two-run shot, this time to right field as Cal increased its lead to 5-0.
Boesch struck again in the fifth with an RBI double down the line in left. After an intentional walk to load the bases with one out, Reese Baker came in for Prince to face Van Winden. Baker did not allow a hit in the inning, but a hit batter, walk and RBI groundout pushed the Cal lead to 9-0.
WSU scored its only runs of the contest in the bottom of the fifth. Greg Lagreid hit a two-run homer, scoring Jim Murphy. Prince suffered his first loss of the season as he worked 4.3 innings, allowing nine runs on eight hits. Baker went the rest of the way, working 4.7 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out one.
WSU had just four hits on the evening, one each from Jay Miller, Ryan Krauser, Paul Gran and Lagreid.
For the evening Boesch had three hits, drove in five and scored three runs. Taylor Grigsby and Allen Craig added two hits each. Morrow allowed both Cougar runs on three hits while striking out five. Matt Gorgen and Alex Trafton each worked an inning in relief.
