No. 13 Arizona State Rallies With 10-9 Win Over USC In 10 Innings
April 15, 2006
TEMPE, Ariz. - Seth Dhaenens's bases-loaded bloop single Friday to left gave the No. 13 Arizona State Sun Devils a 10-9 victory in 10 innings over the No. 20 USC Trojans. ASU evened the Pac-10 Conference series after rallying with three runs in their last two at-bats to force extra innings.
Dhaenens went 3-for-5 as Arizona State (26-11) remains tied for second place in the Pac-10 at 5-3 with Oregon State. USC (22-15) is 1 ½ games ahead of both teams in first place at 8-3.
Brett Bordes (6-1) earned the win for the Sun Devils with two scoreless innings. Paul Koss (0-4) took the loss, allowing three runs (all unearned) in 2 1/3 innings on four hits.
Hector Estrella had his season-high hitting streak for USC snapped at 13 games, going 0-for-4 on the evening.
ASU held a 6-5 lead in the fifth after shortstop Frank Mesa launched a three-run homer to right, his first of the season. USC answered with three in the sixth on a two-run double by Blake Sharpe and an error on a fly ball by left fielder Brett Wallace.
With the Trojans up 9-6 in the eighth, two costly errors aided the Sun Devils' rally. USC first baseman Lucas Duda had a hard-hit ground ball go through his legs and freshman Ike Davis made the Trojans pay with a two-run double to right for a 9-8 deficit. With a runner at first and one out in the ninth, Mesa lined a single to right, but right fielder Daniel Perales misplayed the ball, allowing the tying run to score to send the game into extra frames.
The Trojans had runners at first and second with one out when Sharpe hit a ground ball to Mesa. Mesa booted the ball, but threw a strike to third as Dhaenens applied the tag on pinch runner Darin Vieira who overran the base for the second out. Bordes then struck out Cyle Hankerd to end the inning. After a passed ball charged to USC catcher Johnny Bowden put runners at second and third, Ryan Sontag was intentionally walked to load the bases. Dhaenens then hit the flare into left, just in front of a diving Hankerd for the game-winner.
The series concludes at 1 p.m. on Saturday with the game broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
