No. 13 Arizona State Wins In The Ninth, 8-7, Over No. 20 USC
April 15, 2006
TEMPE, Ariz. --- Colin Curtis chopped a single into right field in the bottom of the ninth Saturday as the No. 13 Arizona State Sun Devils defeated the No. 20 USC Trojans, 8-7, to win the Pac-10 Conference series. All three games of the series were decided by one run.
Curtis finished with a 4-for-6 day with three RBI while Eric Sogard hit two home runs, going 3-for-5 with four RBI.
Arizona State (26-11) is now a half game back of first place USC (22-16) in the Pac-10 standings. USC is 8-4 in conference while ASU is 6-3. Oregon State is 5-3 and will play Stanford on Sunday after rain postponed today's game.
Josh Satow improved to 2-0 on the season, shutting down the Trojans with 3 2/3 scoreless innings. Satow allowed just two hits as USC grounded into five double plays on the afternoon. Shawn Olsen (4-3) took the loss despite allowing just one run in three innings.
Olsen walked Joe Persichina to lead off the ninth and moved to second on a sacrifice. J.J. Sferra was intentionally walked, but a wild pitch moved Persichina to third. Willy Fox walked and the Trojans brought in Darin Vieira from center field for a five-infielder set before Curtis chopped a ball over the head of first baseman Lucas Duda for the game-winner.
USC travels to UC Irvine on Tuesday (April 18) for a 6 p.m. game before hosting Washington at Dedeaux Field, Friday through Sunday (April 21-23). All four games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com, with live video available for the Washington series.
