Cougars Sweep Tennessee, Clemson at Redwood Shores
April 16, 2006
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - Washington State women's rowing showed why it is one of the top teams in the nation by sweeping Tennessee and Clemson on the second day of the Stanford Invitational, Saturday.
In the closest of WSU's races, the No. 6 Cougar varsity eight finished in 6:46.5, three seconds ahead of No. 15 Tennessee. The varsity eight has now defeated Tennessee in five of eight races the teams have competed in since WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere arrived in 2002.
The second varsity eight and varsity four also pulled for tight victories in the morning session against Tennessee, winning by seven and four seconds, respectively.
The afternoon session held less drama for the Cougars, but an equal amount of success. All three varsity boats defeated Clemson by over 20 seconds en route to completing a Cougar varsity sweep of The Stanford Invitational. WSU also won three races Friday against Central Florida.
The novice eight defeated Clemson, but fell two seconds shy of beating Stanford.
WSU returns to home water Saturday, April 22 to face Stanford at Wawawai Landing just outside of Pullman.
