UCLA to Face Cross-Town Rival USC Twice This Week

UCLA and USC to Play Meet Twice This Week . . .
The No. 14-ranked UCLA women's tennis team (15-4; 5-2 Pac-10) closes out the 2006 regular season this week with two matches against cross-town rival USC. The Bruins and the fourth-ranked Women of Troy (15-3; 6-1 Pac-10) will kickoff play Tuesday at the Marks Tennis Stadium beginning at 1:30 p.m. That match, which will not count in the conference standings, was originally scheduled for March 17, however was postponed twice due to rain. The two teams will face each other again on Friday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center beginning at 1:30 p.m. That will be the Pac-10 meeting that will count in the final conference standings. Bruins Rout Ducks on Easter Sunday . . .
UCLA snapped its two-match losing skid this past Sunday, posting a 7-0 decision over the University of Oregon at the LATC. The Bruins took all three doubles matches, carrying that momentum into singles play, where all six Bruin players were victorious in straight sets. UCLA, which improves to 10-0 all-time against Oregon, picked up its fifth conference victory of the season.

UCLA Checks in at No. 14 in Fila/ITA Rankings . . .
UCLA is ranked No. 14 in the latest Fila/ITA Team Rankings released on April 11. Individual rankings, which come out every two weeks, were last released on April 4. Laura Gordon is ranked No. 20 in singles. She is followed by No. 42 Tracy Lin, No. 110 Ashley Joelson, No. 117 Alex McGoodwin and No. 124 Anna-Viktoria Lind. Gordon and Riza Zalameda are ranked No. 23 in doubles. New team and individual rankings will be released on April 18. To view the new rankings on Tuesday morning, click HERE and click on 'Rankings.'

Cal Poly Match Cancelled . . .
UCLA's match will Cal Poly this Wednesday has been cancelled and will not be made up. The two teams were originally scheduled to square off back on March 3, however that match had to be postponed due to rain. It would've marked the first-ever meeting between UCLA and Cal Poly.

Gordon to be Honored on Senior Day . . .
As the lone senior on this year's team, Laura Gordon will be honored for her accomplishments the past four years in a short ceremony prior to the start of this Friday's USC match at the LATC. Gordon, who is ranked No. 20 in the country, is enjoying an outstanding senior season, posting a 22-7 overall singles record, including an 11-4 mark in dual-match play. Additionally, she is 7-2 at the No. 1 position. In doubles, she and teammate Riza Zalameda are ranked 23rd in the country. The duo owns a 13-2 overall record and is 12-1 in dual matches at the No. 1 position.

Head Coach Stella Sampras Webster . . .
Stella Sampras Webster is in her 10th season as the head coach of the UCLA women's tennis team. She owns a career record of 163-87 (.652). In her first nine seasons at UCLA, Sampras Webster guided the Bruins to eight top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, including five top-5 showings (1997, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004). In 2004, she led UCLA to the NCAA Finals for the first time since 1991. It also marked the first time since 1991 that the Bruins surpassed the 20-win mark, finishing with a 21-8 overall record.
