PACIFIC-10 CONFERENCE OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Pacific-10 Conference outdoor track and field athlete of the week honors for the week of April 10-16:

Men's Track Athlete of the Week: SHANE CHARLES, WASHINGTON (Sr., St. Andrew's, Grenada). Charles set a Grenadan national record and moved to No. 2 in the 2006 collegiate rankings with a 50.12-second posting in the 400-meter hurdles at the Brutus Hamilton Invite at California on April 15. Charles' time tied for tops in the Pac-10 and second in the nation with UCLA's Brandon Johnson and broke his own national record of 50.46 seconds set at last year's Pac-10 Championships. The time is the fastest by a Washington quarter-hurdler in 15 years, ranks second in UW history, and is just nine-tenths of a second shy of the Pac-10's all-time top-10.

Men's Field Athlete of the Week: ADAM KUEHL, ARIZONA (Jr., Monmouth, N.J.). Kuehl registered an NCAA leading and school record distance in the discus with his throw of 63.89m (209-7) at the Mesa Classic in Mesa, Ariz. This is the No. 8 throw all-time in the Pac-10, and eighth best in the world this year.

Women's Track Athlete of the Week: VIRGINIA POWELL, USC (Sr., Seattle, Wash.). Powell ran a 12.68 to win the 100m high hurdles at Mt. SAC. This is the fastest time in the country this season.

Women's Field Athlete of the Week: BRITNEY HENRY, OREGON (Jr., Spokane, Wash.). In final day action on April 15, in the 48th annual Mt. SAC Relays, Henry unleashed a 13-foot school record and Pac-10 record in the hammer throw to place second in the invitational section (221-7) as the top collegian behind the New York Athletic Club's Erin Gilreath (first, 228-8). Henry moved to second nationally on the 2006 collegiate list, and heading into last weekend, only 20 competitors in the world have thrown farther than Henry this season. Henry's previous season best and school record was 208-7 from the Oregon Preview in Eugene in mid-March.
