Cal Baseball Defeats UC Davis, 8-2

BERKELEY, CALIF. - California took advantage of three UC Davis errors and was led by the hitting of senior shortstop Allen Craig, defeating the Aggies, 8-2, Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved to 19-17, while UC Davis fell to 13-19.
Cal's winning pitcher, sophomore Nick Tess (2-0, 2.0 innings, two hits, one run), gave up a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI groundout by Lukas Kirby, scoring Brandon Oliver, who had advanced to third on Tyler LaTorre's double. The Bears responded by scoring two runs with two outs in the bottom of the first off of Aggie starter Paul Gonzales (0-2, 2.7 innings, five hits, four runs, one walk) on a two-run single by junior left fielder Chris Errecart.
Cal never looked back after Errecart's hit, shutting down UC Davis until the sixth inning and scoring two runs in the third inning on Craig's two-run homer, three runs in the bottom of the sixth on a balk and a two-run single by Craig, and a run in the seventh on a RBI double by Rob Nesbitt.The Aggies picked up their second run on Jimmy Goetz's RBI single up the middle in the top of the sixth.
Besides Tess, other Cal hurlers included freshman left-hander Chris Petrini (4.0 innings, three hits, one run, two strikeouts), freshman right-hander Matt Gorgen (2.0 innings, one hit) and senior right-hander Alex Trafton (1.0 inning, two hits, one walk).
Craig finished the day 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Junior Brennan Boesch added two hits (2-for-5) for the Bears. Daniel Descalso had two hits for UC Davis.
The Bears will next host No. 9-ranked Oregon State in a three-game Pac-10 series, beginning Friday, Apr. 21 at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond. Cal is currently 6-6 in the conference play, while the Beavers are 25-9 overall and 6-3 in the Pac-10.
