April 18, 2006
PULLMAN, Wash. - Scott Campbell had four hits and the Bulldogs scored seven runs in the first inning as Gonzaga University defeated Washington State, 9-4, in a nonconference game Tuesday evening at Bailey-Brayton Field.
With the loss the Cougars fall to 23-15 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 24-14.
Gonzaga never trailed after posting the seven-run first, six of which were unearned. Two Cougar errors in the first three batters opened the door for the Bulldogs, who strung together six singles as part of the big inning. Campbell had two hits in the inning while Darin Holcomb capped the frame with a two-run single up the middle.
WSU answered with a run in the second as Paul Gran led off with a double down the line in left. After a single by Jeff Miller, Gran scored on a double play ball. In the fourth the Cougars cut into the Bulldog lead as Matt Thomas drove a deep home run over the left field fence, bringing in Gran to make it a 7-3 Gonzaga lead. It was Thomas' second home run of the season.
In the fifth three straight hits led to another run as Jay Miller's single, his second of the game, brought home Ryan Krauser. WSU drew no closer as the Bulldogs put up single runs in the eighth and ninth to seal the win. Bobby Carlson led off the eighth with a solo home run to left, his sixth of the season.
Freshman Matt Way started for WSU and suffered the tough loss. Way went three innings, allowing seven runs, only one earned, on six hits with a strikeout. Reese Baker came on to start the fourth and went four scoreless innings, allowing two hits with two strikeouts. Josh Williams and Ross Humes also saw time on the mound.
Offensively the Cougars connected for 11 hits, three from Krauser and two each by Travis Coulter and Miller.
Gonzaga had 13 hits on the evening as Campbell reached base all five plate appearances, including a walk. Holcomb and Carlson each had two hits and two RBIs.
The Cougars are next in action Friday when they begin a three-game, nonconference series at Northern Colorado. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. PST.
