Small Group of Throwers and Vaulters to Compete at UCSD Triton Invite

April 19, 2006

A contingent of throwers, pole vaulters and one sprinter will head to La Jolla, CA this weekend for the UC San Diego Triton Invitational. The meet begins on Friday with the hammer, but all of UCLA's athletes will compete on Saturday during the main portion of the meet.

While most of the team will rest this weekend as they prepare to battle USC in the annual dual meet next weekend (April 29), the throwers and jumpers will look to take advantage of the San Diego wind and post some top season marks.

Senior Chelsea Johnson, the No. 2 vaulter in the country (14-6.25) and junior Jacqueline Nguyen, the No. 7 vaulter (13-5.25) will lead the pole vaulters into San Diego. In all, seven women will compete in the pole vault on Saturday - Johnson, Nguyen, sophomores Nicci Faires, Megan Jamerson, Ingrid Kantola, Elizabeth Woepse, and freshman Anastasia Papadakis.

Senior Briona Reynolds, junior Kamaiya Warren and sophomore Danielle Smith will compete in the discus. This meet always attracts several of the top discus throwers in the nation and world because of the incredible winds, and these three Bruins will hope to take advantage of the wind and post some top season marks.

Freshman Hillary Werth will also compete in the shot put, while freshman Krystin Lacy will run the 400m.
