April 19, 2006
Arizona State hits the road for a Pac-10 conference series against the UCLA Bruins at Jackie Robinson Stadium. ASU took two of three from USC over the weekend before dropping a game to Texas Tech on Monday. UCLA took two of three from Arizona, then beat Long Beach State 9-7 on Tuesday. The Bruins enter the weekend with a 21-15 record, 5-4 in the Pac-10.
The Sun Devils vs. The Bruins:
Arizona State holds a 99-58 advantage in the all-time series with UCLA. In 2005 the Sun Devils swept the three-game set at Packard Stadium. ASU won two out of three in 2004, the last time the two teams met in Los Angeles.
Player of the Week:
Eric Sogard became the third Sun Devil to earn Pac-10 Player of the Week honors this year when he was honored by the conference on Tuesday. Ike Davis and Andrew Romine also earned the honors this season. Sogard hit .529 over the four games, knocking in six runs. He was a homer short of the cycle on Thursday night, but made up for it with two big flys on Saturday afternoon. Both of the homers were two-run jobs that gave ASU a lead. Sogard had five extra base hits, scored seven runs and drew three walks over the four games. This is the 79th time a Sun Devil has been honored as Pac-10 Player of the Week.
Two Out Blues:
The Devils have allowed 110 runs to score with two outs in an inning, 47% of their 234 runs allowed. They have scored 101 runs with two gone in an inning, 35% of the 287 runs that ASU has scored. USC scored 12 runs with two away, while Texas Tech scored five. ASU crossed the plate 10 times with two outs against USC and twice against TTU.
The Sun Devils are ranked 10th in Collegiate Baseball, Baseball America and the NCBWA poll. The USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll has the Sun Devils ranked 11th. The #10 ranking marks the highest ranking ASU has enjoyed this season. They also were ranked #10 in the Coaches poll on March 27th.
