Beavers Shut Out Bruin Softball, 2-0
April 21, 2006
LOS ANGELES - Solo home runs in the first and seventh innings were enough offense for Oregon State on Friday afternoon, as the Beavers (31-7, 3-4 Pac-10) defeated UCLA (34-4, 6-2 Pac-10) by a score of 2-0 on Friday afternoon at Easton Stadium. Each team had just four hits in the pitchers duel with UCLA's Anjelica Selden striking out 10 and Oregon State's Brianne McGowan posting nine K's on the afternoon.
Cambria Miranda led off the game with her ninth home run of the season to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead. UCLA had its first two hits of the game in the third inning as Ashley Herrera, batting left-handed, poked a slap-hit single over the head of Beavers third baseman Sherina Galvan for an infield hit. Tara Henry followed with an infield hit of her own, giving the Bruins two runners on with no outs, but the runners were unable to advance, leaving two runners on and continuing to trail after two innings of play.
After giving up the leadoff home run, Selden settled in, posting seven strikeouts through four innings, including striking out the side in the fourth. She would finish with 10 strikeouts on the day and surrendered just four hits. The final hit for the Beavers was a one-out home run to left field by Lisa Allen to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Bruins tried to put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh. Jodie Legaspi came through with a one-out single through the left side, and Whitney Holum connected on a single up the middle to give the Bruins two on with two outs. Pinch-hitter Danielle Peterson came in and drew a full-count walk to load the bases for pinch hitter Jennifer Schroeder, but Schroeder would strike out to end the game with OSU winning 2-0.
The Bruins return to action on Saturday with a 2 pm first pitch against Oregon. Prior to the game against the Ducks, UCLA will recognize the donors who made the renovation of Easton Stadium possible. UCLA and Oregon will conclude the weekend series with a 1 pm game on Sunday at Easton Stadium.
