Cal Baseball Loses to No. 9 Oregon State, 5-2
April 21, 2006
BERKELEY, CALIF. - California out-hit Oregon State, 8-4, but was plagued by five errors, giving up five unearned runs in a 5-2 loss to No. 9 ranked Oregon State Friday afternoon in a Pac-10 game at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears fall to 19-18 overall and 6-7 in the conference, while the Beavers improved to 26-9 and 7-3 in league play.
Junior right-hander Brandon Morrow suffered his first loss of the season (7-1, 7.0 innings, three hits, five unearned runs, two walks, five strikeouts) after a disastrous fourth inning in which he hit the lead-off batter, Chris Kunda, and then walked Mitch Canham. After getting Darwin Barney to pop-up to first base, Morrow was able to get Cole Gillespie to ground to shortstop Allen Craig on a potential double play ball, but Craig's error allowed Kunda to score and extended the inning. Then after striking out Bill Rowe, Morrow yielded a walk to Shea McFeely, a two-run single to Scott Santschi and a RBI single to Ryan Gipson.
The Beavers added another run in the top of the fifth when a Craig throwing error allowed Kunda to advance to third base, and Kunda ended up scoring on a Canham ground out to second base.
The Bears generated some excitement in the bottom of the seventh when Craig knocked a two-run homer off of OSU reliever Mark Grbavac to get within, 5-2. But, Beaver junior left-hander Kevin Gunderson was able to earn his 10th save of the season, pitching the final 2.0 innings with three hits, no runs, no walks and three strikeouts.
The winning pitcher for OSU was junior right-hander Dallas Buck, who improved his record to 8-0, throwing 6.0 innings with four hits, no runs, four walks and two strikeouts.
Craig finished the day 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, and junior catcher Garrett Bussiere also finished with a pair of hits (2-for-4). It was Craig's second two-run homer in the last two games.
The Bears will next host Oregon State in the second game of the three-game Pac-10 series, Saturday, Apr. 22 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
