Bears Complete Spring With Cal Day Scrimmage

April 22, 2006

BERKELEY - The California Golden Bears put the wraps on 2006 spring football workouts Saturday afternoon with a Cal Day scrimmage in front of approximately 4,000 fans at Memorial Stadium.

Things started quickly with sophomore quarterback Nate Longshore connecting with sophomore receiver DeSean Jackson for a 70-yard touchdown on the first snap of the day.

Later in the scrimmage, Longshore teamed with tight end Craig Stevens for an 11-yard score for two of the three touchdown passes by the Bears on the afternoon. A pair of redshirt freshmen, quarterback Kyle Reed and tight end Cameron Morrah, teamed up for a five-yard scoring play late in the afternoon.

'It was a good spring,' said head coach Jeff Tedford, who is on the verge of his fifth season as the Golden Bears head coach. 'We got a lot done...we learned a lot. The younger players got some repetitions.'

'I thought things went pretty smooth today. There weren't a lot of penalties,' he added. 'We executed well and I thought the first defense did a good job when it was on the field.'

Along with the passing scores, the Bears got a pair of rushing touchdowns from Marshawn Lynch (3 and 5 yards) and Justin Forsett scored from 11 yards out.

The defense got in the act with Tim Mixon returning an interception 85 yards for a score.

Three quarterbacks turned in solid efforts (Longshore, Reed and Steve Levy) with Joe Ayoob serving only as a holder in the kicking game while nursing a sore ankle.

'Nate will take the first snaps of the fall but it really doesn't matter,' Tedford said. 'Joe sat out today, but did a great job throughout the spring and will definitely be in the mix during the fall.'

California will open its fifth season under Jeff Tedford on Sept. 2 when it visits Knoxville, Tenn., to face the Tennessee Volunteers. The Bears' home opener will be the following week (Sept. 9) against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
