Pole vaulters Chelsea Johnson and Jacqueline Nguyen highlighted a small group of UCLA track and field athletes at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational on Saturday as the duo went one-two in the vault competition, posting season-high marks.
Johnson, a senior, jumped a season-best 14-8.75, the No. 2 mark in the nation so far this year to win the event. She trails Florida State's Lacy Janson, who broke Johnson's NCAA pole vault record (15-0) on Friday at the ACC Championships with a new record jump of 15-0.25. Nguyen finished second to Johnson with a new lifetime-best and No. 7 mark in the nation of 13-9.25. The mark was a four inch personal-best for the junior.
Also in the pole vault, sophomores Ingrid Kantola and Elizabeth Woepse posted season-best jumps of 12-5.50 to finish in a tie for seventh-place. Sophomores Megan Jamerson (12-1.50) and Nicci Faires (11-5.75) also equaled their season-best jumps to finish 12th and 17th, respectively. Freshman Anastasia Papadakis was 25th with a mark of 10-10.
In the discus competition, junior Kamaiya Warren threw a season-best 168-4 to finish 11th overall, while sophomore Danielle Smith was 23rd with a mark of 143-8, also a season-best. In the shot put, freshman Hillary Werth finished 26th with a throw of 36-8.25.
Freshman Krystin Lacy, the only runner in the meet for UCLA, placed ninth in the 400m, running 56.69.
UCLA will next face USC in the annual dual meet battle on Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30. The hammer competition will be held on Friday, while the remainder of the meet will run on Saturday. Fox Sports Prime Ticket will be covering the meet live on television.
