No. 15 Cardinal (15-3) Beats Cal 5-2 in Berkeley

Stanford concluded its dual match season today with a 5-2 win over California at the Hellmen Tennis Center in Berkeley. The Cardinal, now 15-3 overall and 5-1 in the Pac-10, won two of three doubles matches to win the doubles point, then won four of six singles matches to defeat the Bears.
The Cardinal, ranked 15th in the country, won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to win the doubles point and take a 1-0 leading heading into singles play. KC Corkery and James Pade, currently ranked 25th in the nation, beat Cal's Tyler Browne and Conor Niland, the 37th ranked doubles team in the country, 8-4. At No. 2, Stanford's Matt Bruch and Blake Muller recorded an 8-6 win over Cal's John Pettit and Daniel Sebescen.
Cal won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but Stanford scored victories at Nos. 3-6. In the featured match at No. 1 singles, Niland, who is ranked 3rd in the nation, won a three-set match over Corkery, ranked 23rd, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Bruch was upset by Cal's Tyler Browne, 6-7, 7-6, 6-1. Bruch is ranked 15th while Browne is ranked 116th.
The rest of the match, however, was all Stanford. James Pade, ranked 113th in singles nationally, beat Lennart Maack at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-3. James Wan defeated Sebescen at No. 4 by a 6-2, 5-7, 6-0, Muller beat Ken Nakahara 6-3, 7-5 at No. 5 singles and Phil Kao beat Dean Wallace at No. 6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Stanford next competes at the Pac-10 individual championships in Ojai, CA., April 27-30.
