No. 18 Washington Sweeps Oregon 7-0

April 22, 2006

Seattle, Wash. -- The No. 18 Washington men's tennis team (18-4, 5-1) defeated their northwest rival Oregon (6-17, 0-7), 7-0 in the Huskies' Bill Quillian Stadium. UW was victorious on all three of the doubles courts and then carried the momentum over to singles where the Huskies swept the Ducks in straight sets. Washington is one win away from clinching a share of the Pac-10 Title, a feat that was accomplished for the first time in school history during the 2005 season.

UW started the match playing with the poise and confidence that lead the team to defeat No. 7 UCLA, resulting in victories on all three of the doubles courts. The number one doubles team composed of Alex Slovic and Daniel Chu lead the charge for the Huskies. Chu and Slovic defeated Thomas Bieri and Gustavo Loza 8-2. Pac-10 player of the week Jean-Noel Insausti and Mike Ricks clinched the doubles team point for Washington with a 8-2 win over Oregon's Markus Schiller and Vladimir Pino on the third doubles court. Klaus Jank and Andy Kuharszky wrapped up doubles play in the second position, defeating Eric Pickard and Mike Myrhed 8-6.

In singles Andy Kuharszky was the first to strike for Washington playing in the fourth singles position. Kuharszky emphatically defeated the Ducks' Gustavo Loza 6-1, 6-2. Klaus Jank acquired the third team point for the Huskies by defeating Vladimir Pino 6-3, 6-1 on the sixth court. Clinching the match for Washington was junior Daniel Chu. Chu turned in a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Eric Pickard in the fourth singles spot.

Insausti continued with the play that resulted in a Pac-10 player of the week award. On the third singles court Insausti rolled to a 6-4, 6-0 win over Mike Myrhed. No. 33 Alex Slovic won his match 6-3, 6-4 over Markus Schiller in the number one singles position. Slovic was down 1-4 in the second set, but then went on the win five straight games to take the match. Pierre Metenier concluded the match defeating Thomas Bieri 6-3, 7-5 in number two singles.

The Dawgs will play their last conference match of the season against the California Golden Bears on April 26 at 11:00 A.M. in Ojai Calif. The following day Washington will take part in the Pac-10 Championships, which is also being held in Ojai. The tournament features a doubles and singles bracket including four players from each respective school. An invitational tournament will also be held giving the majority of the athletes the opportunity to compete before the NCAA Tournament from May 20-29.
