No. 2 California Defeated No. 14 Washington in Three of the Four Races

April 22, 2006

BERKELEY, CALIF. - The Bears won three of the four races today, beating Washington in a dual race for the third straight year. The varsity eight, varsity four and novice eight were all victorious over Washington, but the Huskies avoided a sweep by winning the second varsity eight race by six seconds.

Cal's coxed varsity four held a strong lead over Washington throughout the 2000 meter race, the Bears held an 11 second lead by the 1000 meter mark and finished the race 21 seconds ahead of the Huskies.

The Huskies held a short lead over the Bears at the 500 meter mark, but the Bears quickly turned things around, capturing a one second lead at the 100 meter mark. The Bears slowly expanded their lead to nearly two full seconds at the finish.

The second varsity eight race proved to be a tough race for the first 1000 meters, but past the half way marker Washington took a sizeable lead over the Bears, finishing seven seconds ahead of Cal.

The Washington novice eight took a one second lead over the Bears after 500 meters, but Cal didnt allow the Huskies to stay in the lead for much longer, capturing a one second lead of their own after 1000 meters and finishing the race three seconds ahead of Washington.

'I have mixed feelings about today's race,' said Head Coach Dave O'Neill. 'It feels good to win three of four races, but it is clear we could have done a better job. We have one more race before Pac-10s, so we are going to use that as a final preparation for our championship races.'

Cal will face off against Stanford Saturday, April 30 at 9 am at Redwood Shores.
