April 22, 2006
BERKELEY, CALIF. - The California Golden Bears won the Schoch Cup, winning all three of the races in the dual race against Washington, Saturday morning at Redwood Shores. All three Cal boats won their races with an open water margin.
In the men's varsity eight race, the Huskies jumped out to an early lead of .28 seconds after 500 meters, but the Bears quickly turned things around, progresively moving ahead of Washington and finishing the race almost nine seconds ahead of the Huskies.
The second varsity eight started off in a similiar fashion to the varsity race, with the Huskies jumping out to a quick half second lead after 500 meters. Cal turned things around and ended up with a four second margin of victory over Washington.
The Bear's freshman eight also started out half a second behind the Huskies after 500 meters. Just like all the other Cal boats, the Bears regained the lead by the 1000 meter mark. The Freshman eight ended up winning by four and a half seconds. This win was the freshman eight's fourth consecutive victory over the Huskies, the Bears longest such streak.
Cal will face off against Stanford Saturday, April 29 at 9 am at Redwood Shores.
