No. 5/6 Stanford Downs No. 8/10 Arizona State, 3-1

Stanford, Calif. - No. 5/6 Stanford Softball (33-9, 6-5) took down No. 8/10 Arizona State (40-7, 4-4), 3-1, today in the first of two games against the Sun Devils this weekend. Arizona State's Mindy Cowles hit a home run in the fifth inning to put the Sun Devils ahead, but Stanford tied it up in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single by sophomore Tricia Aggabao. Sophomores Michelle Smith and Erin Howe also collected RBI singles in the sixth inning to give Stanford the win.
ASU put a runner on second base in the second inning, but sophomore pitcher Becky McCullough struck out three batters to end the inning without a run.
Freshman infielder Maddy Coon knocked a single to right field to open the bottom of the fourth inning, advancing to second base on an error, but the inning ended runless for the Cardinal.
Cowles hammered a home run over the left field fence to score the first run of the game for Arizona State in the top of the fifth, her 14th home run of the season. Senior pitcher Laura Severson entered the game to pitch and the Cardinal turned two outs at second base to end the inning, 1-0, in favor of the Sun Devils.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Howe hit a single to left field and senior Shoney Hixson entered the game to pinch run at first base. Junior outfielder Jackie Rinehart advanced Hixson to second base with a sacrifice bunt. Aggabao then knocked a single to right field, scoring Hixson from second base to tie the game at 1-1.
Senior outfielder Catalina Morris opened the bottom of the sixth inning with a double to right field. Senior infielder Lauren Lappin moved her to third base with a sacrifice bunt. Coon then reached on a fielder's choice, with Morris still safe at third base. Smith hit a single over the third baseman's head, bringing home Morris to put Stanford ahead, 2-1. With two outs, Howe knocked a single to left field, bringing home Coon from third base.
Stanford's defense held off the Sun Devils in the seventh inning to claim the win, 3-1.
In the circle, McCullough struck out three batters, walked none and allowed just three hits in four innings. Severson allowed no hits and walked none in three innings.
