Varsity Eight Win Highlights Opening Home Regatta
April 22, 2006
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State's seventh-ranked varsity eight defeated No. 16 Stanford, earning its sixth victory this spring at Wawawai Landing, Saturday.
The marquee race between Stanford's varsity eight and WSU's best boat was the closest of the day. The boats matched each other stroke-for-stroke through the first half of the race, but the varsity eight pulled away in last 1,000 meters to defeat Stanford by three seconds.
The win is the varsity eight's sixth against a ranked opponent this spring, and stands as the first over Stanford since May 19, 2002, when WSU edged the Cardinal by .7 seconds at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships.
WSU's second varsity eight boat also captured a victory, using a steady pace to slowly pull away from the Cardinal. The Cougars led by two seconds at the halfway point, and finished the race in 6:36.45, six seconds faster than Stanford.
The single WSU loss of the day came in the varsity four race, where Stanford pulled out to a small lead early and held on for a four second victory.
In an intrasquad novice race, WSU's novice four 'A' defeated the novice eight by just over a second, and bested the novice four 'B' by 21 seconds.
The Cougars return to action at Wawawai Landing Saturday, April 29 to face northwestern rival Oregon State.
