Bruin Rowers Sweep Miller Cup
April 23, 2006
On Sunday April 23, the UCLA women's rowing team held the Miller Cup on their home course in Marina del Rey. Conditions were beautiful as there were minimal winds and an outgoing tide. The Bruins were impressive as they cruised to victory in all four categories: V8, 2V8, V4, and N8. USC, UCSB, LMU, UCI, and SDSU attended the 31st annual event named in honor of former Vice-Chancellor Dr. Norman P. Miller.
UCLA's varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four boats all advanced to the grand finals after winning their preliminary heats. There was no qualifying heat for the novice eight as only three schools entered boats in the competition. In the closest finish of the day, UCLA's N8 was able to pull out a four second victory over the Gauchos of UCSB.
In the first grand final, UCLA's varsity eight got off to a clean start and fended off a pesky LMU team to capture a six second victory. It was a close race for the Miller Cup until the 300m mark when the Bruins stretched out their lead and sprinted to the finish. UCSB finished third with a time of 6:42.3.
The second varsity eight grand final consisted of UCLA, SDSU and USD. The Bruins once again found open water early and finished with a time of 6:43.3. SDSU placed second with a time of 6:57.7, followed by USD (7:08.3).
In the varsity four grand final, UCLA displayed its dominance as the V4 completed the Bruin sweep with a time of 6:26.3. The closest contender, LMU, finished with a time of 6:37.2, while the Aztecs of SDSU crossed the line 11 seconds behind them.
