No. 5/6 Stanford Drops 3-1 Contest To No. 8/10 Arizona State

Stanford, Calif. - No. 5/6 Stanford Softball (33-10, 6-6) dropped a close contest to No. 8/10 Arizona State this afternoon, falling 3-1. Senior outfielder Catalina Morris scored the first run of the game for the Cardinal in the bottom of the first inning, but Arizona State's Michelle Smith hit a two RBI single in the top of the third to give the Sun Devils the victory.

Freshman pitcher Missy Penna struck out two batters in the top of the first inning to bring the Cardinal up to bat. Morris was hit by a pitch to get on base. Senior shortstop Lauren Lappin slammed a double down the left line to bring Morris home for the 1-0 Cardinal lead.

Jackie Vasquez collected the Sun Devils' first hit of the game with a single to shortstop in the bottom of the third inning. Jessica Mapes hit another single to left field to advance Vasquez. Smith then stepped up and knocked a triple to the right field fence, scoring Vasquez and Mapes to put Arizona State up, 2-1. Senior Laura Severson entered the game to pitch midway through the third inning.

Penna reached with a single to third base to start the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Cardinal hitters couldn't bring her home.

Kristen Miller knocked a base hit to left field to get on base in the top of the fifth inning and Delenah Langley entered the game to pinch run for Miller. Vasquez moved Langley to second base with a sacrifice bunt. Smith then collected her second triple of the day to right field, scoring Langley to put the Sun Devils ahead, 3-1.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Lappin laid down a bunt to get on base and later advanced to second on a wild pitch, but the inning ended runless for the Cardinal.

Sophomore catcher Erin Howe hit a single to left field on the first pitch to open the bottom of the seventh inning and senior Shoney Hixson entered the game to pinch run at first base. Junior leftfielder Jackie Rinehart pounded a slap hit to shortstop for a base hit, advancing Hixson, but the Sun Devils' Katie Burkhart struck out two Cardinal batters to end the inning. Arizona State grabbed its fifth conference win of the year, 3-1.

In just over two innings in the circle, Penna struck out three batters, walked one and allowed three hits. Severson struck out two batters, walked none and allowed two hits in over four innings. For the Sun Devils, Burkhart struck out eight batters, walked one and allowed five hits in seven innings.

In three games over the weekend, Lappin hit .429 with two RBI and a double. Sophomore infielder Tricia Aggabao tallied a .375 average with one run and one RBI. Severson was 1-0 in the circle with a 0.88 ERA, collecting a win over Arizona State yesterday to improve to 8-0 this year.

The Cardinal will hit the road this week, taking on Oregon on Friday, April 28 (4:00 pm). Stanford will then head to Corvallis to square off against Oregon State on Saturday, April 29 (1:00 pm) and Sunday, April 30 (1:00 pm).
