Softball Defeats Oregon, 5-2
April 23, 2006
LOS ANGELES - Jodie Legaspi's 12th home run of the season opened up a five-run second inning, which provided enough offense for UCLA to defeat Oregon 5-2 on Sunday afternoon. The Bruins improve to 36-4 (8-2 Pac-10) with the victory while Oregon falls to 19-16 (1-6 Pac-10). Anjelica Selden earned the victory in the circle, striking out seven.
Oregon struck first, plating a run in the top of the first inning on a single, stolen base and wild pitch from Sari-Jane Jenkins that put her on third base and allowed her to score on a Breanne Sabol groundout.
The Bruins answered in the second inning as Legaspi led off with her 12th home run of the season. Lisa Dodd followed with a single, but was out at second base on a fielders choice by Jaisa Creps. Creps would go to second on a lefty slap-hit single by Ashley Herrera. Tara Henry grounded into a fielders choice, but Herrera beat the throw at second base, loading the bags for Andrea Duran. After Duran drew an RBI walk to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead, Krista Colburn looped a two-RBI single into right field just over the head of Oregon 2B Suzie Barnes, scoring Creps and Herrera and advancing Duran to third. A sacrifice fly by Caitlin Benyi would complete the scoring, giving UCLA its fifth run of the inning.
Oregon scored a second run in the sixth inning on an RBI single from Lovena Chaput, but was unable to put together any additional offense and the Bruins went on to win 5-2.
UCLA returns to action on Wednesday, April 26, when the Bruins and Washington will resume a game that was suspended because of heavy rains in Seattle on April 15, then play the regularly scheduled game at 2 pm. The suspended game will resume at noon on April 26 with UCLA's Ashley Herrera leading off the top of the third inning. The Bruins will bat as the home team in the regularly scheduled game.
