Volleyball Welcomes UCSB Transfer Janine Sandell
April 23, 2006
SEATTLE-- The defending national champion Washington volleyball team has added senior transfer Janine Sandell to its roster for the 2006 season. Sandell played the last three seasons at UC Santa Barbara where she was the 2005 Big West Conference Player of the Year.
Sandell, a 5-10 outside hitter out of London England, will challenge for a starting position left by the graduation of Pac-10 Player of the Year Sanja Tomasevic and All-Pac-10 selection Brie Hagerty. The Huskies also return two-time All-American Christal Morrison to the outside as well as redshirt junior Stevie Mussie, who sat out lest season with a medical redshirt, and sophomore Jill Collymore. Also in the mix at outside hitter will be newcomers Becky Perry and Kindra Carlson.
A three-year letterwinner at UCSB, Sandell finished the 2005 season with 5.26 kills per game, which ranked eighth nationally. Her 572 kills ranked fourth on the Gaucho all-time single-season list and her 33 kills vs. Missouri State on Sept. 2 marked a UCSB rally scoring school record.
Sandell earned four Big West Player of the Week honors in three years, including three awards last season. She posted double-figure kills in all 30 matches and led or tied for the team lead in kills in every match but one. Sandell also recorded 3.51 digs per game and had 16 double-doubles last season, while her 0.37 service aces per game ranked sixth in the conference. Sandell has 1,251 career kills at UC Santa Barbara to rank 10th on the Gaucho's all-time list.
'We are very excited that Janine has decided to join our program,' said head coach Jim McLaughlin. 'She is a tremendously talented player but, more importantly, she has the desire to become the best player she can be. She has only been in the program for a brief time now but she has been willing to do everything we have asked of her. As she learns our systems and better understands how we do things here, she has the potential to be a significant contributor on this team. I think she is going to be a wonderful addition to our team and I am looking forward to seeing just how well she does this coming season.'
Washington opens the 2006 campaign on Aug. 26 when it faces Ohio at the AVCA College Volleyball Showcase in Madison, Wis.
