Conwell Named Pac-10 Field Athlete of the Week
April 24, 2006
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Washington senior Will Conwell has been named the Pac-10's men's field athlete of the week, Pac-10 Conference Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Monday. Conwell is the second Husky to receive the honor this season, following senior Shane Charles' selection as Pac-10 track athlete of the week one week ago.
The consecutive selections of Charles and Conwell marks the first time since 1998 that two Washington track and field athletes have been honored by the conference in a two-week span, and the first time since 2002 that UW has had more than one athlete honored in a single season.
A 2001 graduate of Kentwood High School, Conwell on Saturday became just the fifth Husky ever to top the 200-foot mark in the discus with a lifetime-best throw of 200 feet, 1 inch at the Triton Invitational in San Diego. Conwell finished fifth at the prestigious event -- tops by a collegian, and ahead of three of the nation's top-five collegiate throwers, including national leader Adam Kuehl of Arizona -- while recording the fifth-best throw by an American this year, and the sixth-best in the current collegiate rankings.
A 177-foot thrower entering the season, Conwell has improved his best by more than 23 feet in 2006, including throws of 185 feet in March and 198 feet in April, before his award-winning 200-1 effort this weekend.
Stanford's Sarah Hopping was honored as the conference's women's field athlete of the week, while the Cardinal's Chauntae Bayne and Oregon's Matt Scherer captured women's and men's track athlete of the week honors, respectively. For more information, visit www.pac-10.org.
