Cougar Throwers Car Wash Nets $2000 for Teammate
April 24, 2006
PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University Track and Field throwers held their Fourth Annual Car Wash Sunday, April 23, and raised $2000 in donations to benefit teammate Eric Nygard with his medical expenses as he fights cancer.
'The cars were lined up when we started at 9 a.m. and there was a continuous stream of work for the throwers - six women and eight men and volunteer assistant coach Andrea Thornton - until 4 p.m. Sunday,' WSU Associate Head Coach Debra Farwell said. 'There were also many cancer survivors who just stopped by to donate. It was very a rewarding experience.'
This is the fourth consecutive car wash conducted by the Cougar throwers and the most successful to date. Car washes the previous three years have brought in donations totaling $3,100 with each car wash benefiting a local community member in need.
This year the proceeds go to Eric Nygard, a WSU track and field athlete who is a senior from Wenatchee, Wash. A 2005 Pac-10 scorer in the 400m hurdles, Nygard was originally diagnosed with testicular cancer in October 2005. After surgery he was thought to be in remission but learned this past January that the cancer had returned. Nygard resumed chemotherapy treatments immediately and was forced out of track and field competition until he courageously ran at the Cougar Invitational Meet April 22. His wife, Jenny, and infant daughter, Aubree, were in attendance to watch his return to racing. Nygard continues to attend classes and plans to graduate from WSU in August and pursue a career as a dentist.
'The Cougar throwers are grateful to the community members and the rest of the Washington State University track and field team as well as the Pullman Bank of America and the Pullman Chevron Gas Station for their donations in support of Eric,' Farwell said.
A benevolent account has been established at Washington Mutual Bank and donations can be made to the Eric Nygard account at any Washington Mutual branch.
